Super Mario Galaxy , Over-rated?
Well, this is a little rant i felt like posting.
Since i've noticed alot lately that mario games always seem to be rated highly, and have been for a while even that super mario sunshine game which was actually a very poor game. And wasn't very enjoyable at all.
As for galaxy i admit it's a great game.
But i believe many mario games are over-rated and aren't as amazing as people make them out to be.
Hell i've got sonic games that i find ten times more enjoyable than a mario game, but then again thats because i like speedy games more than slow paced platforming.
But this isn't why i believe that, trust me i know as well as any sonic fan [apart from the ignorent and over-protective ones] that sonic games have been going downhill dramatically lately.
And the last decent sonic game was secret rings on the wii.
Which is why we hope for a better 3d adventure on the next outing.
Anyway back to the matter at hand. Mario games feel over-rated to me. These games seem to always score in the 90's. Yet sunshine was a game that didn't deserve such a high rating in my opinion, it had a boring gameplay, obviously mario plots are far too simple to be called a propper plot, but still. Mario had well become boring on the gamecube, the game sucked and i feel that since mario 64 and because of all the other previous mairo games they over-rate him and expect him to do amazingly well. I mean i've even seen some people say it's good just because it's mario.
Now we have to draw a line somewhere between saying it's good because whose in it and saying if it's actually any better than the last game in the series, instead of doing it all based on whose in it, which i feel many magizines do.
Now mario galaxy deserved the rating it got, however i still don't think it's as amazing as people make it sound, i've got the game and i think myself that the zelda game is still alot better than this mario game, and i think zelda scored higher anyway, but still i can understand fans enjoying it, and even i enjoy the game to a certain extent but i still don't think that this game deserves to be over-rated like this.
It's the opposite of what happens to sonic games, most sonic games automatically get under-rated due to it staring sonic, i've seen it happen way to many times now.
Your thoughts?
No flaming please.

RE: Super Mario Galaxy , Over-rated?
I share your opinion, it was a good game, but it also has a few niggles... such as at times the camera angle is rather bad, and IMO the only replay value it has is playing as luigi, who only seems to run a little faster, and jump better... and the little co-op mode was a waste, as it had no real use. HOWEVER, it did have quite a few hours of gameplay (i got to about 30-40 hours so far, on and off)
And i agree, sunshine was a little lax in gameplay, but it just seemed interesting how they were playing with all aspects of gameplay (still a fairly fun game)

RE: Super Mario Galaxy , Over-rated?
I still love Super Mario Galaxy and would easily rate it a 9.5 out of ten. The game has a bunch more replay value than previous games (playing as Luigi after collecting 120 stars as Mario), has a great challenging difficulty, and has a fantastic array of levels. The only thing I didn't like about Super Mario Galaxy was how the camera angles went weird and the controls spazzed just a little if you changed gravity angles instantly. But other than that, I enjoyed the game a lot, but now I've collected all 242 stars...maybe I'll start over again...
Also, Twilight Princess was good, but WAY too easy, I wish they had some sort of difficulty option because I found myself beating the game too quickly (around 13-15 hours I think).

Incineration Studios - We're getting there!

RE: Super Mario Galaxy , Over-rated?
I think it's a matter of opinion. Some people like speedy games. Some people like puzzles in their games. It all depends on the player.
Mario Sunshine was IMO not a terrible game, but it wasn't the greatest because it felt like I'd done this before and there wasn't anything groundbreaking or breathtaking about that water thingie on your back (I kinda thought it was stupid...) With the gravity elements of Mario Galaxy it brought a whole new aspect to the game. I enjoyed the co-op mode because it enabled my wife to play with me, a game we can play together and both enjoy, and it was simple as she prefers RPG's (such as the Final Fantasy series) to platformers (like Mario) or speedier games (such as Sonic).
I prefer Zelda over FF, she prefers FF over Zelda. I play my games, she plays hers... I guess it just depends on who you are...
You make a good point tho. Nintendo could release a game called "Mario takes a Dump" and people would still go for it.
I can't wait for the new Sonic to come out, it looks old school, but new at the same time!

Hmm....simply put, no. I think this game has just hard enough to make me mad but easy enough that I eventually pass it. The play back is amazing as well
I just got a Wii Classic Remote from these guys! Sign up and then send me a PM so that I can tell you how to get enough points to get something in less than an hour!

RE: Super Mario Galaxy , Over-rated?
i have to admit sunshine was a let down, A BIG LET DOWN. but super mario galaxy is different especially the graphics and the gameplay, just flying round the galaxy and experimenting the gravity. iv'e completed the game with all 121 stars with mario and luigi i think that shows my dedication

RE: Super Mario Galaxy , Over-rated?
I loved Galaxy. It showed what the Wii can do in Gameplay & Graphics. If you were expecting a Super Mario 64 type experience (like ground-breaking and new), you won't get that feeling until Virtual Reality comes out. Sunshine was a letdown, because the whole plot was based on ecogreen concepts & cleaning up. Galaxy has great effects, gameplay, and physics. Galaxy>SM64>Any NES/SNES Mario -Time Machine, fun with numbers, letters, and Mario is Missing>SMS IMO.
